Tours of the Mansion and Gardens are offered by appointment only. Tours tell the story of the development of the property and the three intriguing families who lived at The Highlands from 1796 to 1965. A call before your visit is required to ensure docent availability (215-641-2687).

 

The Highlands is located 17 miles north of the center city of Philadelphia, PA at
7001 Sheaff Lane, Ft. Washington, PA 19034. Group tours are offered with advance notice.

Visitors are welcome to walk and explore the gardens and grounds daily, for free, from dawn to dusk.
We simply ask that visitors respect the space during private events and photo shoots that are scheduled in advance.

GROUP TOURS

 

Set amidst 44 acres of rolling hills and formal gardens, The Highlands Mansion and Gardens offers a glimpse into the past lives of a historic house and garden. Lived in from 1796-1970, this home has been home to many families and been faced with many changes, including additions to the house and the creation of the garden.

 

Tours focus on the architecture and history of the house and garden.

Original owner Anthony Morris and his family called The Highlands their home for 12 years. Next, the Sheaff family resided on the growing estate for more than 100 years and began building the gardens we see today. In the early 1900's,  Caroline Sinkler lived here and created a Colonial Revival garden. She gave the house to her niece and nephew, Emily and Nicholas Roosevelt in 1941. The Roosevelts sold The Highlands to the Commonwealth of PA for $1 in 1965. The Highlands Historical Society was formed in 1975 and partnered with the commonwealth to care for the property. In 2022, the HHS became proud owners of The Highlands.
